Zakir Hussain is an Indian musician from Maharashtra. Originally from Mumbai, Zakir Hussain was born in 1951. Born to Tabla Maestro Alla Rakha, Zakir was a child prodigy. He graduated from St. Xavier’s Mumbai and received his doctorate in music from University of Washington. His father being his mention taught him Tabla from the age of 3 and he began touring alongside him from the age of 11. Realizing his talent, he was roped in several southern classical movies where he surprised everyone with his raw talent. Zakir Hussain has appeared in several documentaries, movies and ad films. He’s a busy musician as well with a staggering 150 concert dates a year. For the contribution, Zakir Hussain was awarded  Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan from the Government of India. He was also a recipient of the Grammy’s in 2009 under the Contemporary Music category for his collaboration on “Global Drum Project”.
