Richa Chadda was born on 18 December 1986. Her father Mr Somesh Chadda owns a corporate training firm while her mother Mrs Kusum Chadda is a professor in Delhi University. Richa chadda was born in Amritsar at the time of the Khalistan riots and her family had to move to delhi when she was just a year-and-a-half.
Richa Chadda completed her schooling from Sardar Patel Vidyalaya in 2002 here she scored 82% marks and got admission at St Stephen’s college for her Bachelors in History. Later she went on to earn a Diploma in Social Communication Media from Sophia College in Mumbai. Richa Chadda’s parents were keen for her to become a TV journalist.
Before entering films, Richa chadda did her internship with a men’s fashion magazine called Man’s world. She tried hands on theatre and modelling as well post completing her internship. She actually worked in numerous plays in India. Later, she also received her training under Barry John. In fact, Richa Chadda attended various theater workshops in Mumbai with Kalki Koechlin, Gulshan deviaah and Ranveer Singh before any of them got famous.
Richa Chadda was also one of the contestants of Gladrags Megamodel 2008. She routinely took up advertisements and small modelling jobs and landed her first role quite easily after an audition. Richa made her acting debut in a supporting role as Dolly in Dibakar Banerjee-directed film Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye. She also appeared in a 2010 comedy film Benny and Babloo. A Kannada movie in which she had acted titled Nirdoshi was also released in 2010 after a delay of almost 3 years.
When Anurag Kashyap was making Dev D, Richa Chadda auditioned for the role of Chanda but the role went to Kalki. Anurag however promised her a role in future. She did not not think too much of the promise but he did cast her in a pivotal role in the crime drama Gangs of Wasseypur – Part 1. This was her big break as she mentioned later that the role got her 11 film roles.
Richa chadda went on to star in highly acclaimed movies like Fukrey, Masaan, Main aur Charles, Chalk n Duster and Sarbjit.
With her acting skills and devotion to the craft, Richa Chadda has created a unique position for her in the Indian movie industry. She is surely on her way to a long and sustained career. We wish her all the best for all her future roles and performances.
Richa Chadda starred in AIB’s video Harrassment through the ages. The video was very successful and took a humorous look on the way women are portrayed in Indian movies. She was named amongst the 30 under 30 of Forbes Magazine in 2016.
Richa Chadda went to the Cannes Film festival in competitive category for 3 years in a row. She lent her support to a PETA ad campaign in 2014 by posing as a mermaid. Richa Chadda worked with director Mira Nair in a Mexican-American anthology film called Words with Gods where she played the role of Meghna. The film was screened at the 71st Venice International Film Festival
Her movie Masaan was appreciated at 2015 Cannes Film Festival and won two prestigious awards. In 2006 Richa Chadda directed and wrote a documentary called Rooted in hope.
