Lesser known facts

  1. Major Somanth Sharma had a long lineage of family men serving in the Army. His paternal grandfather, Pandit Mohan Lal served in the Jammu and Kashmir state force. His father, Major General Dr. Amar Nath Sharma himself was a decorated Army officer. His uncle Krishna Dutt Vasudev (K. D. Vasudev) was part of Hyderabad regiment in the British Indian army and was killed in action in Malaya in 1942.
  2. Major Sharma used to spend majority of his time with maternal grandfather Pandit Daulat Ram Vasudev. He used to to tell him stories from Bhagwad Gita which influenced Somnath deeply.
  3. Major Somnath Sharma had once joked that either he would die in a battle earning Victoria Cross for his bravery or would later become the Chief of Army staff. While he died in the battlefield and won Param Vir Chakra, his younger brother Vishwa Nath Sharma became the General of Indian army. His brother Surendra Nath also rose to the rank of Lieutenant General in the Army.
  4. In 1942, Major Sharma was commissioned in the 19th Hyderabad Regiment of British Indian Army. He joined the war against the Japanese in Burma during the World War 2 in the Arakan Campaign. His name was mentioned in dispatches for his gallant actions during the Arakan campaign.
  5. In October 1947, during the Pashtun infiltration from the Pakistani side, Major Sharma and his D company of 4 Kumaon was put on patrol duty in Budgam to check the movement of Infiltrators. In afternoon, Major Sharma’s company was attacked from Gun and mortar shells from houses nearby. To save unnecessary civilian casualties, Major Sharma didn’t order a counter fire.
  6. Within no time, his company was surrounded from 3 sides with a Lashkar of 700 heavily armed men. Major Sharma realized the importance of holding the post as it would save the capital as well as the Srinagar Airport.
  7. He commanded his men to fight till last breath and took upon himself to supply ammunitions to soldiers firing LMG’s (Light Machine Gun). He ran from post to post encouraging his men, often exposing him to enemy fire. Despite being outnumbered to a ratio of 7:1, the D company killed more than 200 infiltrators. Major Sharma died when a mortar shell exploded in front of him.
  8. The Shipping Corporation of India (SCI) under the aegis of Ministry of Shipping named an Oil Tanker on Major Somnath Sharma’s name.
  9. The Army postal service issued a postage stamp in the honor of the PVC winner.
  10. A road in New Delhi was named as “Major Somnath Sharma Marg”. Also, a colony in R. K. Puram sector 12 was named as Som Vihar to remember his immense contribution in ensuring the safety and security of the citizens of India.
  11. A memorial park was also inaugurated which has a bust of Major Sharma in its midst.
