26 Feb- Death anniversary of Vinayak Damodar Savarkar who was a politician as well as an author and playwright. Savarkar established the term Hindutva to create a collective ‘Indian’ identity. Savarkar was also an atheist who disapproved of orthodox Hindu belief. In England he was associated with India House and founded student societies like Abhinav Bharat Society and free India Society. He also authored ‘The Indian War of Independence’ about 1857 rebellion. Savarkar was sentenced to two life imprisonment terms in Cellular Jail. He also served as president of the Hindu Mahasabha. The airport at Andaman and Nicobar has been named Veer Savarkar International Airport. Indian Government conferred India's highest civilian award, Bharat Ratna, to him.
