Death of Indian born astronaut Kalpana Chawla

Kalpana Chawla died in the disaster that happened with Space Shuttle Columbia which occurred on 1 February, 2003. The shuttle disintegrated during its re-entry into the Earth’s atmosphere which burnt the whole shuttle killing all 7 crew members on board. This unfortunate development happened just 16 minutes before the expected mission conclusion time.

Investigations by NASA later revealed that a peace of Foam insulation fell off during during the launch of the spacecraft which struck the left wing of the orbiter. The incident was discarded as some previous launches too had witnessed pieces of insulation falling off. But, the engineers later learned that there could have been a significant damage to the aircraft to the left wing of the shuttle. The damage to Aluminium heat insulator tile might have caused the whole shuttle to heat up to a degree where it caught fire and started burning.

Birthday of Indian Cricketer Ajay Jadeja

The erstwhile Indian cricketer Ajay Jadeja made his debut to Indian team in 1992 and featured regularly in the team till 2000 until his image was maligned by the match fixing allegations. Jadeja was born in the Nawanagar Royal family in Jamnagar, Gujarat on 1 February 1971. His relatives included K.S. Ranjitsinghji and K.S. Duleepsinghji after whom Ranji and Duleep trophies are named. Jadeja now makes his presence felt as a commentator.

Judgement on Bhopal gas Tragedy

Bhopal Gas Tragedy was the worst industrial disaster that India ever witnessed. The incident which was caused by the leak of Methyl Isocyanate (MIC) resulted in the death of more than 10000 people. Union carbide India Limited (UCIL) pesticide plant developed a leak which caused this nightmare. The slow judicial progress and uncertain industrial laws took 8 years to declare Warren Anderson (CEO) a fugitive in relation to this case on 1st February.
